It seems to me that limited government is a necessary precondition for equality as disparities in wealth seem most significant in the societies with most government. I'm writing from a US perspective here. In dollar terms, there may be a huge gap between the average American and Bill Gates, but neither has to really worry about where the next meal is coming from. The difference hardly compares to the difference between the rulers and the ruled in despotic countries like North Korea where starvation is a reality for many while the rulers live in comfort.
