It depends on the type of manufacturing being considered. The UK will never be able to compete as a low cost producer but only through high value added design and manufacture.


And indeed, perhaps a relative contraction of the manufacturing sector will free up resources to be better employed elsewhere...

... but then again, it might be that they can't compete for some of those resources (people and land, for example) because they're being bid away to the public sector.
