Speaking for the Stupid Party (and proudly), I don't think a big downturn would help us much. If anything, it might provoke an "always keep a hold of nurse" reaction, keeping us well out. Better to have a few years of below-average but consistent growth, so people get complacent and a bit bored - it's at that point they'll be most keen to take a risk on changing government.
