Unlike the stock-market, there is no fundamental reason for an on-going, long-term upward drift in art as we find in the equity markets. It will be interesting to see what happens to recently launched art funds ... I predict some thing quite ugly, noting your points about selling in a crisis and significant transaction and carry costs.
